There are a great variety of ways to make money on the internet. Sometimes far too much than is really necessary.

A serious beginner needs to wade through an incredible amount of information before he/she knows what works and what doesn’t.

Then again, everyone has a different threshold and level of knowledge. How far do you want to go, in order to make money online? What do you know about the different ways of doing so? What have you personally tried?

That’s also why its fun and educational to learn from people with different experiences and backgrounds. So instead of just hearing from me on this topic, I’ll open this up to everyone who reads Dosh Dosh by doing a group meme or survey

Survey Topic: What’s the Best Way to Make Money Online?

If someone came up to you and said that they wanted to know the best way to make money on the internet. What would you tell him or her? Let’s imagine that the individual in question is eager and willing to learn what is needed for real results.

By best, I mean the method that brings the greatest amount of potential income, while being practical, cost-effective and do-able. I know a great deal depends on the individual skill levels and interest, so it can be quite difficult to provide a fix-all solution that is suitable for everyone.

I would suggest focusing on what you personally think, feel or know is the best way to earn money online. Elaborate a little on the general steps you think someone should take to successfully utilize the method you’ve suggested. Imagine you’re talking to a friend who trusts your opinion and experiences.

Reasons Why I’m Doing This Group Survey

There are several reasons why I am doing this exercise. First of all, I am curious about what you all think about the topic matter. Not everyone reading Dosh Dosh is a blogger and many are entrepreneurs, small business owners and marketers, so the response should be interesting and useful.

Secondly, this is a good way to give some exposure for everyone. Many of you have been leaving comments regularly, visiting the site daily or promoting it on social media websites. Some have also been subscribed to Dosh Dosh for a long time too. I really do appreciate all the support.

This is a way of saying thanks, by sending you some traffic and visitors. Dosh Dosh gets a decent number of daily visitors and over time, that could translate into a fair amount of traffic and free publicity for you.

To participate in this group discussion, you simply need to address the survey topic by either leaving a comment or writing a blog post.

Everyone who leaves a comment will have their opinion listed within this or a new article itself, with a link to your website (if you have one). If you write a new blog post referencing this article, you’ll get a link to your blog post as well.

I don’t really like deleting external links left by readers, especially when they point to to shady or spam sites so I’m going to institute a no-links policy for comments across the board. Use Link Units near your navigation. Link Units tend to be most profitable if they are clicked on by users searching for something particular. Therefore, placing the Link Unit near your navigation is the prime place users look to find what they are looking for on your site.

One Google Adsense tip is to follow the Google Adsense TOS (Terms of Service). For example, you may use Google Adsense on as many web pages as you want throughout your website but remember to follow the Google Adsense rules that state you can have a maximum of three ad units and three link units per page.

When deciding on a topic to build your website around, choose a topic that is more of a niche topic instead of a general topic. Google Adsense works best when the website topic focuses on a specific niche because the targeted ads become more closely related to the topic. When a website is very broad you will notice the Google Adsense ads are often not relevant to the content of the page and this reduces the likelihood of users clicking on the ads. With a targeted site you get better related ads and therefore the CTR will be much better.

1. For short articles, CTR is best when ads are placed just above the content

2. For long articles, CTR improves if ads are placed somewhere in middle of the content - visitors read the long content and then they are looking for more resources.

3. Use Text Ads instead of Image Ads as users get more options. If you still want to display image ads, consider ad formats that support image ads - Choose either the 300×250 medium rectangle or the 160×600 wide skyscraper - or both, if you display multiple ad units on a page.

4. Google Ads without background color and borders always perform better. Make the border color and background color same as your page background color.

5. Always put ads above the main fold. Make sure that the ad unit with the highest clickthrough rate is the first instance of the ad code that appears in the HTML. Since the first ad unit is always filled before the rest, you want to make sure that ad unit is located in the best placement on your page.

6. Try setting the ad link URL color to a lighter shade. If your text is black, you may make the adlink as light gray.

7. Go Wide - The large rectangle is the best paying adsense format (336×280) - The Google Adsense Publisher team also feels that the best formats are the wider ones - the ad formats that contain the widest individual ads. a. Strictly follow the rules mentioned in Adsense policies. You will always earn more revenue from Adsense by playing it clean.

b. Never modify the Google Adsense HTML code. If have trouble embedding AdSense code in your WordPress or Blogger template, take help of the AdSense support forums or send an email to your AdSense account manager.

Websites that rank higher in a Google search (SERPS) will get a
better per-click payout than websites which rank lower for the
same search term.

I don’t know if that’s because Google just wants to reward sites who meet
their criteria for high search listings or because they assume that sites that
rank higher are going to have better users for advertisers than lower-ranked
sites.

Most likely though, is that it’s all about content relevance. A top-
ranking website is considered more relevant than a lower-ranking one. So
keep an eye on your Google Search Ranking for your targeted search terms
and work continuously to optimize your website. The upshot is that when

experience I can tell you that it's like swapping a hundred-dollar bill for a
ten-dollar one.

For almost one year I settled for just a tenth of what I could have been
making — just because I didn't bother to control the looks and placement of
my AdSense ads.

The various ad formats, colors and their placement on the web page can be
done in thousands of combinations. You can literally spend hours every day
experimenting with every possible combination. But you don't want to, do
you?

Let me give you a few 'ground rules' that have sky-rocketed the CTR's on my
top-grossing pages:

Don't "look" like an ad

People don't visit your website for ads. They want good content.

If you make the ads stick out with eye-popping colors, images or borders,
that makes them easy to recognize as ads — and people work extra hard to
avoid them.

The same goes for ads that are tucked away in the top, bottom or some
other far corner of the page. So easy to ignore!

If you want people to click, make the ads look like an integral part of your
content.

Today's visitors are blind to banners, mad at pop-ups, weary of ads and
skeptical of contests and giveaways. So how do you win their confidence?
Simple. Don't make your ads look like ads!

Go for text ads instead of image ads

A text ad offers many advantages over image ads:

A. With the right formatting, a text ad 'blends in' with your site content. An
image ad will not give you the same freedom with its
appearance, as the only thing you can play with is the size
and positioning.

B. You can squeeze more text ads into the space that a
conventional banner takes. People love to have more
choices!

C. Properly formatted text ads don't look like clutter. Banners
do!

D. People hate banners and avoid them at sight. Many tests
confirm that people are much more receptive to text ads
related with your content.

The Best Performing Ad Size

So you’ll want to use text ads and you’ll want them to look like anything but
an ad. But you’ll also want them to be a particular size. Which size is that?

336 x 280 – the Large Rectangle.

Why should you choose the 336 x 280 ad block? Simple. It gets the most
clicks! My studies have shown that this format looks most like real content
added to a page. I’ve dabbled with every size Google offers and this is the
size that consistently has the best results. Other people have told me the
exact same thing. That’s all I need to know!

Second best is the 300 x 250 – The Medium Rectangle.

This ad block size is really useful when you went to have two sets of ads side
by side. They fit on most web pages just perfectly!

I would also recommend using the 'wide skyscraper', text-only ads on the
right hand edge of the screen — in conjunction with the 3-way matching I
talk about in chapter 4.

If you think about it, nearly all PC users are right handed (even left-handed
people like me control their mouse with their right hand because it's how we
were 'brought up' to use a mouse.) By placing the ads on the right hand
edge it's psychologically 'less distance' between your right hand and the
screen.

This 'closeness' in my opinion makes the user feel more comfortable and
therefore more likely to click through to a link. They feel more in control of
their visit experience.

Stay away from the 468 x 60 ad block!

One of the first things people do when they sign up for AdSense is to grab a
468 x 60 ad block.

Big mistake.

I have a theory about why they do this. It’s the same theory that explains
why the 468 x 60 block does not entice clicks.

Most site owners have the mindset that when they put Google ads on their
site, they must place the code that conforms most to traditional web
advertising. And that would be...? Yup, the 468 x 60, the ubiquitous banner
format that we have all come to know and love and... IGNORE.

Everyone is familiar with the 468 x 60. And that’s exactly why the click-
through rate on this size is very low, even among advertisers who use
images on their banners.

The 468 x 60 blocks screams, "Hey! I am an advertisement! Whatever you
do, DON'T click me. In fact, you should run from me as fast as you can!"

In all but a few special cases, I have found the 468 x 60 ad block to be
completely ineffective, and recommend ignoring it the same way your visitors
do.

Using Colors To Increase Your Clicks

once a fashion show where each model wore the exact same black
outfit for the entire duration of the show. Boring? Hardly! The show was
intended to showcase platinum jewelry, and the outfits were designed to
enhance the jewelry — instead of distracting the audience.

You don’t have to make all the pages on your website identical (or black).
But you do want to make sure that the look of your page draws attention to
the ads — and makes them appear as attractive and as valuable as platinum
jewelry.

Many websites have strong graphic elements that catch the eye —
usually at the expense of the AdSense units.

If you're using AdSense, be judicious in the selection of fonts, font size,
colors, images, tables and other visual aspects of your website.

Draw subtle attention to your AdSense units. Make them the stars of
your show!

Make the border go!

You can more than DOUBLE your click-through's with this one simple
tweak!

Even before the Internet, ads in newspapers and magazines were marked off
with a thick, heavy border. No wonder borders and boxes have come to
symbolize advertising messages.

Ads with prominent borders make your pages look cluttered. They distract
the eye from the ad text, while marking off the ad blocks from the rest of the
content.

Google provides an extensive color palette in your administrative area (see
above). Use it to tweak the look of your ads to suit your web page.

With just one simple click, you can match the color of your ad's border with
the background color of your web page. When the border blends with the
background, it frees up loads of space. The page looks instantly neater and
the ads look more inviting.

Make sure you also pick a matching background color for the ad. The ad's
background must match the page background on which the ad will appear.
If the ad appears in a table, match the table background with the ad
background. The key is to blend the background and border color with the
page, so that the text looks like an integral part of your web content.

Text is Design too!

That's right: the text size, font, color and the color of your ads must match
the other text elements. If the text color of the ads is the same as the text in
the body of your page, it’ll help the ads blend into the site and make the
reader feel that you’ve endorsed them.

And if the size of the font in the ads is the as the size of the main body of the
content, it will have the same effect: they’ll look like part of your site and not
something brought in by Google.

That’s the sort of blending that translates into clicks.

You can see this on my blog. I’m running a test where I’ve changed the title
color of the ads to match the color of the titles on the text. I’ve also matched
the text color of the ads to the color of the site text and the background of
the ads to the background of the page. (I could also change the size of the
font and see what that does to my CTR.)

This 3-way matching (titles, text and background) can generate excellent
click-through rates.

Too many text styles add clutter and can confuse your visitors. Instead, try
every legitimate way to make the ads look like a part of your web content.

In other words use the colors to make sure that your ads don't look like
ads!

Blue Is Best

So you want to get rid of the border. You want to get your ads the same
color as the text on the rest of your page and the background matching the
background color of your Web page.

But what about the link itself, the line the user is actually going to click?
What color should that be?

That’s an easy one: blue.

I used to say that all the text in the ad should match the text on your page,
including the link. After seeing an article about the benefits of keeping the
links blue — and testing extensively — I don’t say that any more.

The logic is that users have come to expect links on websites to be blue. Just
as they expect stop signs to be red and warning signs to be yellow, so they
expect their links to blue.

That means people are more likely to click on a blue link than a link
in any other color.

The line in your AdSense code that sets the color of your link is the one that
says:

Google_color_link = “#color”;

“#color” is the hexadecimal number for the color you want to use. You
should make sure that number is #0000FF.

Keep your link blue and you can experience an increase in click-throughs as
high as 25 percent!

Deliberate Mismatching

When it comes to choosing colors, I recommend 3-way matching and using
blue for the links. But there is another strategy that you can use.

You can deliberately mismatch your ad colors and styles, provided you keep
it to the top of your page.

This distinction generates two powerful 'zones' and therefore two types of
experience for the visitor.

The first zone is always at the top of the first page, above the main site
banner. The titles and text colors match colors found in the banner graphic
heading. (Important — the URL links are hidden, so only certain text ads will
allow you to do this.)

The end result is that these ads, placed above the banner graphic look like
key control points for your site and are just more likely to be clicked. The
visitor feels that they are visiting the another major area of that site.

1. If you absolutely MUST use Java script drop down menus, image maps or image links, be sure to put text links somewhere on the page for the spiders to follow.

2. Content is king, so be sure to have good, well-written and unique content that will focus on your primary keyword or keyword phrase.

3. If content is king, then links are queen. Build a network of quality backlinks using your keyword phrase as the link. Remember, if there is no good, logical reason for that site to link to you, you don’t want the link.

4. Don’t be obsessed with PageRank. It is just one isty bitsy part of the ranking algorithm. A site with lower PR can actually outrank one with a higher PR.

5. Be sure you have a unique, keyword focused Title tag on every page of your site. And, if you MUST have the name of your company in it, put it at the end. Unless you are a major brand name that is a household name, your business name will probably get few searches.

6. Fresh content can help improve your rankings. Add new, useful content to your pages on a regular basis. Content freshness adds relevancy to your site in the eyes of the search engines.

7. Be sure links to your site and within your site use your keyword phrase. In other words, if your target is “blue widgets” then link to “blue widgets” instead of a “Click here” link.

8. Focus on search phrases, not single keywords, and put your location in your text (“our Palm Springs store” not “our store”) to help you get found in local searches.

9. Don’t design your web site without considering SEO. Make sure your web designer understands your expectations for organic SEO. Doing a retrofit on your shiny new Flash-based site after it is built won’t cut it. Spiders can crawl text, not Flash or images.

10. Use keywords and keyword phrases appropriately in text links, image ALT attributes and even your domain name.

11. Check for canonicalization issues - www and non-www domains. Decide which you want to use and 301 redirect the other to it. In other words, if http://www.domain.com is your preference, then http://domain.com should redirect to it.

12. Check the link to your home page throughout your site. Is index.html appended to your domain name? If so, you’re splitting your links. Outside links go to http://www.domain.com and internal links go to http://www.domain.com/index.html.

Ditch the index.html or default.php or whatever the page is and always link back to your domain.

13. Frames, Flash and AJAX all share a common problem - you can’t link to a single page. It’s either all or nothing. Don’t use Frames at all and use Flash and AJAX sparingly for best SEO results.

14. Your URL file extension doesn’t matter. You can use .html, .htm, .asp, .php, etc. and it won’t make a difference as far as your SEO is concerned.

15. Got a new web site you want spidered? Submitting through Google’s regular submission form can take weeks. The quickest way to get your site spidered is by getting a link to it through another quality site.

16. If your site content doesn’t change often, your site needs a blog because search spiders like fresh text. Blog at least three time a week with good, fresh content to feed those little crawlers.

17. When link building, think quality, not quantity. One single, good, authoritative link can do a lot more for you than a dozen poor quality links, which can actually hurt you.

18. Search engines want natural language content. Don’t try to stuff your text with keywords. It won’t work. Search engines look at how many times a term is in your content and if it is abnormally high, will count this against you rather than for you.

19. Not only should your links use keyword anchor text, but the text around the links should also be related to your keywords. In other words, surround the link with descriptive text.

20. If you are on a shared server, do a blacklist check to be sure you’re not on a proxy with a spammer or banned site. Their negative notoriety could affect your own rankings.

21. Be aware that by using services that block domain ownership information when you register a domain, Google might see you as a potential spammer.

22. When optimizing your blog posts, optimize your post title tag independently from your blog title.

23. The bottom line in SEO is Text, Links, Popularity and Reputation.

24. Make sure your site is easy to use. This can influence your link building ability and popularity and, thus, your ranking.

25. Give link love, Get link love. Don’t be stingy with linking out. That will encourage others to link to you.

26. Search engines like unique content that is also quality content. There can be a difference between unique content and quality content. Make sure your content is both.

27. If you absolutely MUST have your main page as a splash page that is all Flash or one big image, place text and navigation links below the fold.

28. Some of your most valuable links might not appear in web sites at all but be in the form of e-mail communications such as newletters and zines.

29. You get NOTHING from paid links except a few clicks unless the links are embedded in body text and NOT obvious sponsored links.

30. Links from .edu domains are given nice weight by the search engines. Run a search for possible non-profit .edu sites that are looking for sponsors.

31. Give them something to talk about. Linkbaiting is simply good content.

32. Give each page a focus on a single keyword phrase. Don’t try to optimize the page for several keywords at once.

33. SEO is useless if you have a weak or non-existent call to action. Make sure your call to action is clear and present.

34. SEO is not a one-shot process. The search landscape changes daily, so expect to work on your optimization daily.

35. Cater to influential bloggers and authority sites who might link to you, your images, videos, podcasts, etc. or ask to reprint your content.

Google currently offers four programs: AdSense for content, AdSense for search, adsense for domain and Premium AdSense.

AdSense for content
AdSense for content is the main AdSense program – contextually targeted ads are displayed on your webpage, and you get paid for every click. These ads are specifically targeted to the content of your webpage. Consequently, if you change the content of your page, the ads that are displayed would also change. AdSense allows you good control over what ads get served, since there might be some obvious problems if it didn’t. These include:

Blocking Ads – you choose

While the ad selection is automatic, you can block unwanted ads – such as those from your competitors. You just tell Google which companies to block from your sites.

Reviewing and filtering Ads – semi-automatic

Google has its own strict policies for ad content (no profanity, no racial discrimination, etc). These are filtered out automatically from your point of view. Additionally, you can choose to block additional content through custom filters. Don’t forget that Google also provides us Search boxes that we can put on our site. Do not put

Do not expect much money from Search boxes, but anything that comes in extra counts!

Have your Ads above the fold

This is one of the most important tips to increase your CTR. The term “above the fold”, comes from
newspapers. Any news above the fold on the front page of a newspaper will be read more than
any other part of the newspaper. The same rule applies to AdSense too.
Here, “above the fold” means the top position of your screen that is visible without the user
having to scroll down. So if you place your ads “above the fold”, it will be visible to everyone, and
they won’t have to scroll down. Your Ads are therefore more likely to get clicked. Also, the area
above the fold loads before the rest of the page. So this is by far the best location for AdSense Ad
placement.

Try not to have any other links “above the fold”

This may not always be possible. But if you can, remove all links that are “above the fold”. The only

links displayed should be your AdSense Ads. By having any other link, you are giving your visitors
the option of clicking on them. This will decrease your CTR. If you do not have any other links,
your visitors will sub-consciously be forced to click on your AdSense Ads. This will shoot up your
CTR.

Do not neglect the bottom of your page!

If you have followed the above points, you will find that most people click on the ads above the
fold. But there will be some who will go down the page. And when they reach the end, they

1.Never, I repeat, never click on your own Ads:

If you think by clicking on your own ads, you can fool Google, you are highly mistaken.Google
has got its own proprietary technology to find out if the publisher has clicked on his own ads.

clicks. So make sure you do not make this foolish mistake.

2.Never, I repeat, never tell others to click on your own Ads

Never ever do this.
If you want a strong AdSense business, stay away from trouble.Don’t ask even your friends,
relatives or employees to click on your ads.Do not provide any kind of an incentive to anyone for

3.Never, I repeat, never modify Google’s AdSense code

This is against Google’s policy. Just use the code as-is.Don’t play around with it at all.

This is a relatively new policy.When I started with AdSense, this rule did not exist.Moreover,what
Google actually wanted with this policy was never very clear.Nor did Google do a good job of

Even I had put some pretty images next to my Ads, and achieved excellent CTR. But here is a rule

moment removing images that were next to my ads.After

My suggestion: If you have images next to your AdSense ads, remove them immediately

5.Never, I repeat, never title your ads the wrong way.

You are not allowed to label your Ads with messages like“Click Here”,“Related Links”or anything
else that misleads people into thinking that it is not an Advertisement.
You are however allowed to mention “Advertisements”or “Sponsored Links”, because your ads are
actually Advertisements.And Google is OK with that. If you want, you may prefer not to put any
label at all.

6.Never, I repeat, never put AdSense on pages that do not have enough content.

Yeah, this is something that web-masters may not be aware of. But Google allows AdSense only
on pages with good content.
Therefore it is not advisable to put ads on Thank You pages, subscription pages etc.Make doubly
sure that you have Ads only on pages with good content.
This also means that you should not put your ads on sites with junk content.Any site that doesn’t
really add value to the visitor is considered to be a junk site

7.Never, I repeat, never put AdSense on sites that have got prohibitive content.

Make sure you do not have Ads on sites that have got anything to do with drugs, pornography,
hatred, gambling etc.
Again, this is self explanatory, but some people simply don’t understand!

8.Never, I repeat, never create multiple Google AdSense Accounts.

Google allows you to have only 1 personal account and 1 business account.Google links these
two accounts.Never try to fool Google by creating different accounts under different names.
As long as you do not get caught, it’s fine. But if Google traces these accounts as being used by
the same person, all your accounts are in danger of being suspended.

9.Never, I repeat, never enlist your site in any kind of auto-surf or traffic exchange

programs.
Again, this is against Google’s TOS. So stay clear of it.

10.Never, I repeat, never exceed the amount of ads you can display on a page.

Currently Google only allows 3 Ad blocks, 3 Link units and 3 referral buttons to be put on one
page. I personally feel Google has allowed more than what is required. So, I don’t know why you
would ever want more than this.

11.Never, I repeat, never reveal your AdSense Data

Google doesn’t allow public display of your CTR, Impressions,eCPM etc on forums, eBooks,
websites or any other publicly viewable media.
But Google doesn’t have any objection if you mention how much you earn from AdSense… just
don’t go into the details of your clicks, impressions, CTR, or eCPM.

12.Never, I repeat, never stay outdated!

Google’s policies are constantly changing. It will help if you know what changes are taking place
in the world of AdSense so that you can update your sites if required.
If you get banned by AdSense for whatever reason you cannot give the excuse that you were

You know, there is something really funny about niches.The way some niches work often defies
logic. Niches that you think would be high paying may prove to be total disasters.
And niches that seem to be hopeless might turn out to be real winners. It really has nothing to
do with competition. I always say that you can never be 100% sure about which niches would be
profitable and which won’t.
I have learned that if I go into 10 markets, there will be around 6 that will be winners. So if I want
300 profitable sites, I need to make around 500 sites.
If you ask me, I feel this is much easier than searching for “the best niches” that are out there. It is
just like throwing enough stuff onto the wall and see what sticks.
Once I understood this basic truth, I spent the next few months,making hundreds of mini sites. In

RSS could prove to be a powerful revenue source for AdSense publishers. It can certainly be a good way to inform users that you’ve got new content and bring them back in to view it.

AdSense started allowing publishers to place one ad unit on mobile Web pages in September 2007. You can select the colors, specify the kind of code your mobile page uses (“wml (WAP 1.x)”, “xhtml (WAP 2.0)”, or “chtml”), and choose ad units with one or two text-link ads (although the double unit can only appear at the bottom of the page.)

It’s currently available in thirteen countries, including US, England, France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Ireland, Russia, Netherlands, Australia, India, China, and Japan. It sounds like a good idea, but AdSense for mobile has its challenges. Phones have not shown themselves to be good ways to surf the Web. The screens are tiny, the downloads are slow and it’s very expensive. Most people are prepared to wait until they get home or to the office to look at a website, rather than do it on their mobiles. There are exceptions though. Surfing on phones is fairly popular outside America (especially in Japan). It's even rarer for a day to pass where I don't land on a site that has Adsense way over on the right side of the page, halfway hidden by the fold, probably making less money than that obnoxious flashing Click-Me-or-the-Monkey-Gets-It banner.

Just as you should optimize your pages for the search engines, you should optimize Adsense for your visitors. You don't want to trick your users into clicking on your ads (in order to ensure the continuation of the program, it's important that advertisers receive visitors that convert to sales), but you absolutely want to make sure your visitors notice the ads. The following five tips will help:

#1 Make sure there is enough keyword rich content (text) on your pages so Adsense can figure out what ads to display instead of showing Public Service Announcements. In particular, ensure you have used your keywords in your title and H1 tags.

#2 Blend the background and border to match the page's background. You don't want to trick visitors into clicking, but you don't want them deadened by banner blindness either.

Don’t get a link from “links” pages on sites as these are about 1% as useful as your signature link on the 7th page of a forum thread, unless of course the Page is a PR 9 with a lot of back-links itself
If a site wants to link to you from a page with 100 links on it you can basically forget it as the strength of the link is shared by, well, 100 others!
So if you have a site about Dogs you might want to link out to Crufts or the Kennel Club or Wiki a good one. Naturally, you should also get relevant sites to link to you. If you have a costume website, find a Costume website you can add url to for free.
You need to get into the good Neighborhood Try and get links from the neighbourhoods at the top of Google for your key phrases after all Google likes these sites enough to rank them! Find that circle of sites where all the big boys in your industry link to and are linked from and get involved. For instance, try and get a link from a .gov site!
See who links to your competitors and try and get a link as well (or pay money to have their link replaced with yours

Along with the H1 tags Alt tags and the content in the body of the text on the web page this gives the search engines the information they need to index or put into their database your web page. It is very important that your Meta tags are specific to each page of your site. Do not just copy and paste the same Meta tags to every page on your website. There’s a big explanation from that old and that later. There are several ways to get web pages into the search engines a database (indexed).

Submit your site to the different search engines. There are a lot of sites, for small fee, that will take your indexed pager homepage and submit it to hundreds or thousands of search engines over and over every month for the rest of your life. The meta keyword tag is also sometimes useful as a way to help your page come up for synonyms or unusual words that don’t appear on the page itself but don’t fret too much over your Keywords Meta tag, instead utilize keywords and keyword phrases from your Title Tag element, Description Meta Tag, heading tag and first one or two paragraphs of visible content. Optimal Keyword Meta Tag has 15 to 20 words max. SEO Tip: Don’t repeat your keywords more than 3 times or search engine will consider it as spam of their search results and don’t include keywords that are not in the main content section of your page.

Robots Meta tag will let search engine know if you want a particular page to be or NOT be indexed or to follow or not to follow links on given page.

SEO Tip #5, Optimize Pages with Headings

Header tags will tell the search engine what “words” are important in the context of your page. Using

Adsense Tips : Increase Adsense Earning in a Week

Ad Formats: “Dress” your ads for success!
How would you like your ads served? Banners? Skyscrapers? Rectangles? Squares? What about borders and background colors? The choices can be overwhelming. Many people let Google decide for them- preferring to stick with the default settings. Big mistake! From my own experience I can tell you that it’s like swapping a hundred-dollar bill for a ten-dollar one. For almost one year I settled for just a tenth of what I could have been making — just because I didn’t bother to control the looks and placement of my AdSense ads. The various ad formats, colors and their placement on the web page can be done in thousands of combinations. You can literally spend hours every day experimenting with every possible combination. But you don’t want to, do you? Let me give you a few ‘ground rules’ that have sky-rocketed the CTRs on my top-grossing pages:

Don't "Look" Like An Ad

People don't visit your website for ads. They want good content. If you make the ads stick out with eye-popping colors, images or borders, that makes them easy to recognize as ads — and people work extra hard to avoid them.
The same goes for ads that are tucked away in the top, bottom or some other far corner of the page. So easy to ignore!

If you want people to click, make the ads look like an integral part of your content. Today's visitors are blind to banners, mad at pop-ups, weary of ads and skeptical of contests and giveaways. So how do you win their confidence? Simple. Don't make your ads look like ads! Let’s begin by reviewing each of the different types of ad available from AdSense and explaining their uses... then I’ll introduce you to a few simple choices that zoomed my CTRs to incredible heights.

Text Ads — Google’s Finest

Text ads are probably the types of ad that you’re most familiar with. You get a box containing one or a number of ads with a linked headline, a brief

description and a URL. You also get the “Ads by Google” notice that appears on all AdSense ads. (Google changed this notice recently and it now blends in much better than it used to.) There are eight different types of text ad. The most popular is probably the leaderboard. At 728 x 90, it stretches pretty much across the screen and while it can be placed anywhere, it’s mostly used at the top of the page, above the main text.

That’s a great location. It’s the first thing the reader sees and it offers a good selection of ads to choose from. When you’re just starting out and still experimenting with the types of ads that work best with your users, it’s a pretty good default to begin with. Of course, you can put it in other places too. Putting a leaderboard ad between forum entries for example can be a pretty good strategy sometimes and definitely worth trying. On the whole though, I think you’ll probably find that one of the smaller ads, such as a banner or half-banner might blend in more there and bring better results. And I think you can often forget about putting a leaderboard at the bottom of the page, despite what Google’s samples show you. It would certainly fit there but you have to be certain that people are going to reach the bottom of the page, especially a long page. You might find that only a small minority of readers would get that far, so you’re already reducing the percentage of readers who would click through. Overall, I’d say that leaderboards are most effective blended into the top of the page beneath the navigation bar and sometimes placed between forum entries.

Banners (468 x 60) and half-banners (234 x 60) are much more flexible. Like leaderboards you can certainly put these sorts of ads at the top of the page, and lots of sites do it. Again, that’s something worth trying. You can put up a leaderboard for a week or so, swap it for a banner for another week or so, and compare the results.

But at the top of the page, I’d expect the leaderboard to do better. A banner or a half-banner would leave too much space on one side and make the ad stand out. It would look like you’ve set aside an area of the page for advertising instead of for content. That would alert the reader that that section of the page is one that they can just ignore. When you’re looking for an ad to put in the middle of the page though, a half-banner can be just the ticket. While a leaderboard will stretch over the sidebars of your site, just like the navigation bar, a 234 x 60 half-banner will fit neatly into the text space on most sites.

This sort of ad should be your default option for the end of articles and the bottom of blog entries. But for the most part, stay away from the 468 x 60 banner ad block! One of the first things people do when they sign up for AdSense is to grab a 468 x 60 ad block. Big mistake. I have a theory about why they do this. It’s the same theory that explains why the 468 x 60 block does not entice clicks. Most site owners have the mindset that when they put Google ads on their site, they must place the code that conforms most to traditional web advertising. And that would be...? Yup, the 468 x 60, the ubiquitous banner format that we have all come to know and love and... IGNORE. Everyone is familiar with the 468 x 60. And that’s exactly why the click-through rate on this size is very low, even among advertisers who use images on their banners. The 468 x 60 blocks screams, "Hey! I am an advertisement! Whatever you do, DON'T click me. In fact, you should run from me as fast as you can!" In all but a few special cases, I have found the 468 x 60 ad block to be completely ineffective, and recommend ignoring it the same way your visitors do. Now, that doesn’t mean you can never use it. You just have to know what you’re doing and do it smartly. You have to do everything you can to make sure that that ad block looks absolutely nothing like a traditional banner ad. At my site, WorldVillage.com, I’ve done that by surrounding the ad with text. Because there’s no border around the unit, the ads blend into the text and look almost as they’re a part of the article. If I had left that unit in the middle of some empty space — at the top of the page for example — it would have looked exactly like the sort of banner that users have trained themselves to avoid. It wouldn’t have picked up any clicks at all.

While this use of a 468 x 60 works for me — and it can work for you too if you blend it into the page properly — I’d stick to other formats, like the, half-banner if you’re not 100 percent sure that you can pull it off. When this ad unit fails, it can fail big. Google also offers six different kinds of rectangular ads: buttons (125 x 125), small rectangles (180 x 150), medium rectangles (300 x 250), large rectangles (336 x 280), and two sizes of squares 250 x 250 and 200 x 200. In fact, all of the rectangles can be slotted into the same spots on the page... with the exception of the button.

Second best is the 300 x 250 rectangle

This ad block size is really useful when you want to have two sets of ads side by side. They fit on most web pages just perfectly.

Buttons should generally be used in a different way to other rectangles. Like the half-banners, they’re distinctive for their small size. While that means you could slot them in anywhere, I think they work best when slipped into the sidebars. For example, you might have a list of links to frequently-read articles or other sites on one side of your page. Putting a button ad at the end of a list like that could help it to blend in well. The final types of text ads are those that run vertically. These come in three sizes: skyscraper (120 x 600), wide skyscraper (160 x 600) and vertical banner (120 x 240). Clearly, these are useful options for filling up the sides of the page. I would also recommend using the 'wide skyscraper', text-only ads on the right hand edge of the screen — in conjunction with the 3-Way Matching I discuss later in the book. If you think about it, nearly all PC users are right handed (even left-handed people like me control their mouse with their right hand because it's how we were 'brought up' to use a mouse.) By placing the ads on the right hand edge it's psychologically 'less distance' between your right hand and the screen.

Image Ads — Built To Be Ignored

Text ads should always be your first pick when you start to load up your site. Image ads should always be your last choice. A text ad offers many advantages over image ads:
A. With the right formatting, a text ad 'blends in' with your site content. An image ad will not give you the same freedom with its appearance, as the only thing you can play with is the size and positioning.
B. You can squeeze more text ads into the space that a conventional banner takes. People love to have more choices!
C. Properly formatted text ads don't look like clutter. Banners do!
D. People hate banners and avoid them at sight. Many tests confirm that people are much more receptive to text ads related with your content.

Video Ads

There is however, one type of image ad that you should welcome on your website: Google’s video ads. These are an excellent addition to Google’s inventory and for sites that get them, they can bring very impressive returns. Instead of receiving the sort of static image that just gets ignored, you’ll receive the opening still of an online video. The video is stored on Google’s servers so your download times won’t be affected, and it only plays when the user clicks the Play button, minimizing distraction to the user. That’s a good thing. If a user’s eyes keep drifting to a moving image when he’s trying to read your content, he’s going to get pretty frustrated and not want to come back.

If you’re getting a video ad, track how long it appears on that page and compare the revenues it brings with the days on which no video ad appeared. You should expect to see a spike in earnings. If you don’t see that spike, you can always opt out. Unlike text or image ads though, there’s no guarantee you’re going to get a video ad. To qualify, you have to be opted in to receive image ads on an ad unit in one of these sizes:

● Medium Rectangle (300x250)
● Large Rectangle (336x280)
● Square (250x250)
● Small Square (200x200)
● Leaderboard (28x90)
● Skyscraper (120x600)
● Wide Skyscraper (160x600)

(It’s worth noting that with video ads, the bigger the format, the better the results). If you’re receiving those kinds of image ads and AdSense has a video ad to match your content, you might receive one. But what if you don’t? You’ll be receiving the sort of image ads that earn a poor clickthrough rate. That would cost you money. There are two things that you can do to minimize any losses from fishing for video ads and not getting them. The first is to stop fishing fast. If a week has gone by and your image ad unit hasn’t acquired a Play button, it’s probably not going to. So turn that image ad back into a text ad. The second is to follow the strategy I use at DealofDay.com. I’ve placed two rectangular ads at the top of the page to make them unmissable but one of them is an image ad. Google no longer allows publishers to place related images right next to ad units to draw attention to them but you can put an image ad next to a text ad. If that image ad becomes a video ad, you’re going to earn more money. If it stays an image ad, it’s going to pull eyes into your ad zone. This is about the only time I can think of when an image ad might be better than a text ad.

Link Units — Great Little Stocking Fillers

An ad format that has already proved its worth, when used correctly, is link units. If you’ve ever bought Christmas presents for children, you’ve probably bought stocking fillers. You dole out hundreds of bucks on some state-of-the-art electronic gizmo, toss in a couple of toy cars that cost a dollar each just to fill up space and give the kid more to unwrap... then watch him spend 90 percent of his time playing with the car that cost 10 percent of your total gift budget. Ad Link units have the potential to be equally profitable. They’re very small, almost unnoticeable... but when used well, they can be extremely effective. Ad Link units let you place a box on your site that contains four or five links. They come in sizes ranging from 20 x 90 to 200 x 90, and are really meant to be placed on a sidebar. Because you can place both Ad Link units as well as other ad units on the page, you might find that the choice helps: if a user doesn’t spot something interesting in one type of ad block, he might spot it on another.

Seasons Greeting With Themed Units

There is one more type of ad unit that you can use on your site. You just can’t use it all the time. Every time a holiday rolls around, Google brings out new ad units with seasonal themes.
The designs themselves vary according to season and location (users in Europe, for example, won’t see Thanksgiving ads).
In general, I always say that your ads should be unobtrusive but I like these themed ads. They’re eye-catching without looking like banners. When it’s holiday-time, it’s always worth checking out the format page again and seeing what’s available. To sum up the different types of ad format then...
• Leaderboards are best at the top of the page;
• Squares and rectangles can be embedded into text itself;
• Vertical ads and buttons should slip down the side of the page;
• Vertical link units should be placed next to link lists;
• Horizontal link units can go at the top of the page, between blog entries or above and below directories;
• Image ads should rarely be used at all;
• Themed ads can be slotted in at holiday time;
• And Video ads should be used whenever possible.
Those are the general rules governing ad formats. They’re worth knowing because they’re a good place to start. They’re also worth knowing because you can’t break the rules until you know what they are... and that’s when the fun really begins

One of my all time favorite ways to make money online is with niche or local directories.
I’ve used this on a small basis for a number of years now and it’s a great way earn

Before I go any further, let me explain the difference between a niche directory versus a
local directory. A niche directory offers items to people within a certain niche or interest

CPC - Advantages and Drawbacks

What does CPC indicate?

When we think of high paying keywords, the first thing that pops up in our mind is CPC. CPC (Cost Per Click) is the maximum amount of money an advertiser is willing to pay for a click. However, CPC is not the only factor that tells the profitability of a keyword. There are many other factors that you should consider.

Keywords with high CPC do not always come with high number of advertisers. There are many keywords in Google's Adwords system that have a high price, but almost no or very less number of advertisers. Now, if you build a web page or website around a keyword on which no one is bidding, Google will try to fill the ad blocks with ads of the related keywords rather than the high paying keyword you were initially targeting. There is no guarantee that ads of the related keywords will be good converters. Therefore, there is every likelihood that your clicks will be passed through SmartPricing Filter, eventually resulting in lesser payouts.

Hence, it is important to see the number of sponsors bidding on the keyword in question. If there are more the advertisers, there will be more competition among them to get the top position. This means that there will be more revenue per click that they are willing to share with you. Bidding Quality

The top 20 of these are paying something like $15 per click, while the rest of them pay somewhere between $2 and $0.05. Now you might have found some decent tools that give you the average of top 3 or top 5 positions which is good, but not good enough. The point is that although the top 20 advertisers are paying higher, but the rest 380 advertisers are paying quite low. There is a high probability of your getting the ads of those 380 sponsors. Therefore, the average of the top 20 advertises can be really misleading. The solution to this problem is discussed in the later part of this page.

Niche keywords are the keywords that are highly searched by the web surfers, and are rarely used by your competitors. Less competition means more traffic to your website. Targeting ten niche keywords is easier and more fruitful that targeting a highly competitive keyword. Traffic from niche keywords when directed to a relevant page increases your CTR and conversion ratio.

Determining Competition

People generally take the number of results returned by search engines as the number of pages competing on a keyword. But it is wrong. The Search Engine Results get irrelevant after 10 - 15 pages. Irrelevancy further increases with the depth. The pages that have the keyword dumped in a corner are not competing against you, but search engines will still list them. In fact they have to.

It is assumed that if a webmaster is targeting a web page with a particular keyword, the keyword is used in the title as well as in the anchor text linking to that webpage. Such a page is listed higher by the search engines as it is dedicated to what you searched for. So how to filter out the most relevant results? Check it out!

Inanchor intitle and Its Precision - The Solution

In Google, you can easily determine the EXACT number of pages that are competing against you. You can precisely list out the pages that are using a particular keyword in their page titles or in the anchor texts linking to them.

The query can be applied as follows: intitle:keyword inanchor:keyword.

For example, if the keyword is "hair treatment", the formula will be used in the following manner: intitle:hair inanchor: hair intitle: treatment inanchor: treatment. This figure gives you the exact number of pages that are ACTUALLY Targeting with these keywords, and not those that have just created a page or a small paragraph on the same topic. Google emphasizes on Anchors and Page titles. That's the reason, it supports such a search query.

We shall now discuss some other traditional ways to determine competition.

R/S Ratio

Here, R refers the number of competitor websites for a particular keyword as per the search result of the search engine. And S refers the number of searchers using that keyword while searching their queries. This means that for better results, you have to choose the keywords with lower R/S ratio.

R/S ratio becomes polluted when someone uses the number of results as the number of competing websites. As explained above, counting the number of results as the number of competing pages is the biggest mistake one can make while choosing a keyword. However, the figure becomes quite useful when inanchor intitle is used to create R/S.

KEI Analysis

KEI (Keyword Effectiveness Index) is a formula for measuring the effectiveness of a keyword. The formula was devised by Sumantra Roy. However, this figure also depends upon the number of searches and competition, but with a difference. This formula analyzes the number of searches and competition in such a way that if the searches increase, KEI increases; and if the competition increases, KEI decreases. Higher the KEI, more profitable will be the keyword. However, it becomes polluted when the number of search results are used as the number of competitors.

Determining Traffic

Determining traffic for a keyword is quite important before targeting it. Along with the competition stats, it lets you make out the niches present in any industry. Besides, it lets you predict (to some extent) how much traffic you can expect if you promote a website around a particular keyword. There are two known sources for determining traffic. Overture Keyword Suggestion Tool (now a part of Yahoo Search Engine) and WordTracker. When talking about accuracy, Wordtracker monitors the queries on some meta search engines that actually render it inaccurate . Reason? There is no known stat about how much of the community you are targeting is searching on those meta search engines. However, it's a good tool to make out the niches.

In my opinion, Yahoo owned Overture gives you more accurate stats than Wordtracker. This is for the reason that Overture is a PPC engine. It can show you how many people are searching for a particular term on its vast network. A network which is bigger than any Meta Search Engine. Still, it is not that accurate, but at least better than Wordtracker. The tools that are predicting Google Searches for you are just doing guess work. No one knows the algorithm they use.

Summing It Up

Profitability of a keyword depends more on the number of sponsors than CPC. Number of clicks and bidding quality can't be determined by just monitoring the first 3 or 8 places. It can be rightly assessed by taking out the average of all the 400 sponsors bidding on a keyword. Sounds very tiring for keyword research, right? I never thought about it until I read this post on CopyBlogger that made me realize that ‘Subscriptions generally cost money’.

By asking your readers to subscribe, some might get the feeling that you are asking for money.

To know if its true, I asked a few people (who did not know much about blogging) what they understood by the words ‘Subscribe via RSS’ and ‘Subscribe via Email’.

Their responses were:

for ‘Subscribe via RSS’ - “what is RSS?”, “RSS? what’s that?”, “I don’t know what RSS is”

It's rare for a day to pass in the webmaster forums where somebody isn't asking, "How can I increase my CTR for Google Adsense?" It's even rarer for a day to pass where I don't land on a site that has Adsense way over on the right side of the page, halfway hidden by the fold, probably making less money than that obnoxious flashing Click-Me-or-the-Monkey-Gets-It banner.

Just as you should optimize your pages for the search engines, you should optimize Adsense for your visitors. You don't want to trick your users into clicking on your ads (in order to ensure the continuation of the program, it's important that advertisers receive visitors that convert to sales), but you absolutely want to make sure your visitors notice the ads. The following five tips will help:

#1 Make sure there is enough keyword rich content (text) on your pages so Adsense can figure out what ads to display instead of showing Public Service Announcements. In particular, ensure you have used your keywords in your title and H1 tags.

#2 Blend the background and border to match the page's background. You don't want to trick visitors into clicking, but you don't want them deadened by banner blindness either.

A considerable portion of my consulting time has recently revolved around the optimization of corporate blogs (or the addition of blogs to revamped sites). As usual, I find a pattern emerging in the strategies that need attention and the pitfalls that must be avoided. So, rather than charging $400 an hour to give advice on the subject, I thought it would be valuable to share many of the most common pieces of advice here on the blog (business part of Rand fights with open source Rand, but loses, as usual).

1. Choose the Right Blog Software (or Custom Build)
The right blog CMS makes a big difference. If you want to set yourself apart, I recommend creating a custom blog solution - one that can be completely customized to your users. In most cases, WordPress, Blogger, MovableType or Typepad will suffice, but building from scratch allows you to be very creative with functionality and formatting. The best CMS is something that's easy for the writer(s) to use and brings together the features that allow the blog to flourish. Think about how you want comments, archiving, sub-pages, categorization, multiple feeds and user accounts to operate in order to narrow down your choices. OpenSourceCMS is a very good tool to help you select a software if you go that route.

2. Host Your Blog Directly on Your Domain
Hosting your blog on a different domain from your primary site is one of the worst mistakes you can make. A blog on your domain can attract links, attention, publicity, trust and search rankings - by keeping the blog on a separate domain, you shoot yourself in the foot. From worst to best, your options are - Hosted (on a solution like Blogspot or Wordpress), on a unique domain (at least you can 301 it in the future), on a subdomain (these can be treated as unique from the primary domain by the engines) and as a sub-section of the primary domain (in a subfolder or page - this is the best solution).

3. Write Title Tags with Two Audiences in Mind
First and foremost, you're writing a title tag for the people who will visit your site or have a subscription to your feed. Title tags that are short, snappy, on-topic and catchy are imperative. You also want to think about search engines when you title your posts, since the engines can help to drive traffic to your blog. A great way to do this is to write the post and the title first, then run a few searches at Overture, WordTracker & KeywordDiscovery to see if there is a phrasing or ordering that can better help you to target "searched for" terms.

4. Participate at Related Forums & Blogs
Whatever industry or niche you're in, there are bloggers, forums and an online community that's already active. Depending on the specificity of your focus, you may need to think one or two levels broader than your own content to find a large community, but with the size of the participatory web today, even the highly specialized content areas receive attention. A great way to find out who these people are is to use Technorati to conduct searches, then sort by number of links (authority). Del.icio.us tags are also very useful in this process, as are straight searches at the engines (Ask.com's blog search in particular is of very good quality).

5. Tag Your Content
Technorati is the first place that you should be tagging posts. I actually recommend having the tags right on your page, pointing to the Technorati searches that you're targeting. There are other good places to ping - del.icio.us and Flickr being the two most obvious (the only other one is Blogmarks, which is much smaller). Tagging content can also be valuable to help give you a "bump" towards getting traffic from big sites like Reddit, Digg & StumbleUpon (which requires that you download the toolbar, but trust me - it's worth it). You DO NOT want to submit every post to these sites, but that one out of twenty (see tactic #18) is worth your while.

6. Launch Without Comments (and Add Them Later)
There's something sad about a blog with 0 comments on every post. It feels dead, empty and unpopular. Luckily, there's an easy solution - don't offer the ability to post comments on the blog and no one will know that you only get 20 uniques a day. Once you're upwards of 100 RSS subscribers and/or 750 unique visitors per day, you can open up the comments and see light activity. Comments are often how tech-savvy new visitors judge the popularity of a site (and thus, its worth), so play to your strengths and keep your obscurity private.

7. Don't Jump on the Bandwagon
Some memes are worthy of being talked about by every blogger in the space, but most aren't. Just because there's huge news in your industry or niche DOES NOT mean you need to be covering it, or even mentioning it (though it can be valuable to link to it as an aside, just to integrate a shared experience into your unique content). Many of the best blogs online DO talk about the big trends - this is because they're already popular, established and are counted on to be a source of news for the community. If you're launching a new blog, you need to show people in your space that you can offer something unique, different and valuable - not just the same story from your point of view. This is less important in spaces where there are very few bloggers and little online coverage and much more in spaces that are overwhelmed with blogs (like search, or anything else tech-related).

8. Link Intelligently
When you link out in your blog posts, use convention where applicable and creativity when warranted, but be aware of how the links you serve are part of the content you provide. Not every issue you discuss or site you mention needs a link, but there's a fine line between overlinking and underlinking. The best advice I can give is to think of the post from the standpoint of a relatively uninformed reader. If you mention Wikipedia, everyone is familiar and no link is required. If you mention a specific page at Wikipedia, a link is necessary and important. Also, be aware that quoting other bloggers or online sources (or even discussing their ideas) without linking to them is considered bad etiquette and can earn you scorn that could cost you links from those sources in the future. It's almost always better to be over-generous with links than under-generous. And link condoms? Only use them when you're linking to something you find truly distasteful or have serious apprehension about.

9. Invite Guest Bloggers
Asking a well known personality in your niche to contribute a short blog on their subject of expertise is a great way to grow the value and reach of your blog. You not only flatter the person by acknowledging their celebrity, you nearly guarantee yourself a link or at least an association with a brand that can earn you readers. Just be sure that you really are getting a quality post from someone that's as close to universally popular and admired as possible (unless you want to start playing the drama linkbait game, which I personally abhor). If you're already somewhat popular, it can often be valuable to look outside your space and bring in guest authors who have a very unique angle or subject matter to help spice up your focus. One note about guest bloggers - make sure they agree to have their work edited by you before it's posted. A disagreement on this subject after the fact can have negative ramifications.

10. Eschew Advertising (Until You're Popular)
I hate AdSense on blogs. Usually, I ignore it, but I also cast a sharp eye towards the quality of the posts and professionalism of the content when I see AdSense. That's not to say that contextual advertising can't work well in some blogs, but it needs to be well integrated into the design and layout to help defer criticism. Don't get me wrong - it's unfair to judge a blog by its cover (or, in this case, its ads), but spend a lot of time surfing blogs and you'll have the same impression - low quality blogs run AdSense and many high quality ones don't. I always recommend that whether personal or professional, you wait until your blog has achieved a level of success before you start advertising. Ads, whether they're sponsorships, banners, contextual or other, tend to have a direct, negative impact on the number of readers who subscribe, add to favorites and link - you definitely don't want that limitation while you're still trying to get established.

11. Go Beyond Text in Your Posts
Blogs that contain nothing but line after line of text are more difficult to read and less consistently interesting than those that offer images, interactive elements, the occasional multimedia content and some clever charts & graphs. Even if you're having a tough time with non-text content, think about how you can format the text using blockquotes, indentation, bullet points, etc. to create a more visually appealing and digestible block of content.

12. Cover Topics that Need Attention
In every niche, there are certain topics and questions that are frequently asked or pondered, but rarely have definitive answers. While this recommendation applies to nearly every content-based site, it's particularly easy to leverage with a blog. If everyone in the online Nascar forums is wondering about the components and cost of an average Nascar vehicle - give it to them. If the online stock trading industry is rife with questions about the best performing stocks after a terrorist threat, your path is clear. Spend the time and effort to research, document and deliver and you're virtually guaranteed link-worthy content that will attract new visitors and subscribers.

13. Pay Attention to Your Analytics
Visitor tracking software can tell you which posts your audience likes best, which ones don't get viewed and how the search engines are delivering traffic. Use these clues to react and improve your strategies. Feedburner is great for RSS and I'm a personal fan of Indextools. Consider adding action tracking to your blog, so you can see what sources of traffic are bringing the best quality visitors (in terms of time spent on the site, # of page views, etc). I particularly like having the "register" link tagged for analytics so I can see what percentage of visitors from each source is interested enough to want to leave a comment or create an account.

14. Use a Human Voice
Charisma is a valuable quality, both online and off. Through a blog, it's most often judged by the voice you present to your users. People like empathy, compassion, authority and honesty. Keep these in the forefront of your mind when writing and you'll be in a good position to succeed. It's also critical that you maintain a level of humility in your blogging and stick to your roots. When users start to feel that a blog is taking itself too seriously or losing the characteristics that made it unique, they start to seek new places for content. We've certainly made mistakes (even recently) that have cost us some fans - be cautious to control not only what you say, but how you say it. Lastly - if there's a hot button issue that has you posting emotionally, temper it by letting the post sit in draft mode for an hour or two, re-reading it and considering any revisions. With the advent of feeds, once you publish, there's no going back.

15. Archive Effectively
The best archives are carefully organized into subjects and date ranges. For search traffic (particularly long tail terms), it can be best to offer the full content of every post in a category on the archive pages, but from a usability standpoint, just linking to each post is far better (possibly with a very short snippet). Balance these two issues and make the decision based on your goals. A last note on archiving - pagination in blogging can be harmful to search traffic, rather than beneficial (as you provide constantly changing, duplicate content pages). Pagination is great for users who scroll to the bottom and want to see more, though, so consider putting a "noindex" in the meta tag or in the robots.txt file to keep spiders where they belong - in the well-organized archive system.

16. Implement Smart URLs
The best URL structure for blogs is, in my opinion, as short as possible while still containing enough information to make an educated guess about the content you'll find on the page. I don't like the 10 hyphen, lengthy blog titles that are the byproduct of many CMS plugins, but they are certainly better than any dynamic parameters in the URL. Yes - I know I'm not walking the talk here, and hopefully it's something we can fix in the near future. To those who say that one dynamic parameter in the URL doesn't hurt, I'd take issue - just re-writing a ?ID=450 to /450 has improved search traffic considerably on several blogs we've worked with.

17. Reveal as Much as Possible
The blogosphere is in love with the idea of an open source world on the web. Sharing vast stores of what might ordinarily be considered private information is the rule, rather than the exception. If you can offer content that's usually private - trade secrets, pricing, contract issues, and even the occasional harmless rumor, your blog can benefit. Make a decision about what's off-limits and how far you can go and then push right up to that limit in order to see the best possible effects. Your community will reward you with links and traffic.

18. Only One Post in Twenty Can Be Linkbait
Not every post is worthy of making it to the top of Digg, Del.icio.us/popular or even a mention at some other blogs in your space. Trying to over-market every post you write will result in pushback and ultimately lead to negative opinions about your efforts. The less popular your blog is, the harder it will be to build excitement around a post, but the process of linkbait has always been trial and error - build, test, refine and re-build. Keep creating great ideas and bolstering them with lots of solid, everyday content and you'll eventually be big enough to where one out of every 20-40 posts really does become linkbait.

19. Make Effective Use of High Traffic Days
If you do have linkbait, whether by design or by accident, make sure to capitalize. When you hit the front page of Digg, Reddit, Boing Boing, or, on a smaller scale, attract a couple hundred visitors from a bigger blog or site in your space, you need to put your best foot forward. Make sure to follow up on a high traffic time period with 2-3 high quality posts that show off your skills as a writer, your depth of understanding and let visitors know that this is content they should be sticking around to see more of. Nothing kills the potential linkbait "bump" faster than a blog whose content doesn't update for 48 hours after they've received a huge influx of visitors.

20. Create Expectations and Fulfill Them
When you're writing for your audience, your content focus, post timing and areas of interest will all become associated with your personal style. If you vary widely from that style, you risk alienating folks who've come to know you and rely on you for specific data. Thus, if you build a blog around the idea of being an analytical expert in your field, don't ignore the latest release of industry figures only to chat about an emotional issue - deliver what your readers expect of you and crunch the numbers. This applies equally well to post frequency - if your blog regularly churns out 2 posts a day, having two weeks with only 4 posts is going to have an adverse impact on traffic. That's not to say you can't take a vacation, but you need to schedule it wisely and be prepared to lose RSS subscribers and regulars. It's not fair, but it's the truth. We lose visitors every time I attend an SES conference and drop to one post every two days (note - guest bloggers and time-release posts can help here, too).

21. Build a Brand
Possibly one of the most important aspects of all in blogging is brand-building. As Zefrank noted, to be a great brand, you need to be a brand that people want to associate themselves with and a brand that people feel they derive value from being a member. Exclusivity, insider jokes, emails with regulars, the occasional cat post and references to your previous experiences can be off putting for new readers, but they're solid gold for keeping your loyal base feeling good about their brand experience with you. Be careful to stick to your brand - once you have a definition that people like and are comfortable with, it's very hard to break that mold without severe repercussions. If you're building a new blog, or building a low-traffic one, I highly recommend writing down the goals of your brand and the attributes of its identity to help remind you as you write.

Step #1 - Setup a Google Analytics Account

Go to Google Analytics and sign in using your Blogger login. If your account doesn’t work for some reason, you can create a new one instead. Once you login you’ll see a screen that looks like this:

Click on the “Sign Up >>” button and proceed to the next step which will ask you for your general information. Website URL, Account Name, Country, and Time Zone. The screen will look like this:

If you noticed, I just put my Blogger url (without the http://) and called it “David’s Account” because this is your top-level container for 1 or 100 different websites so it’s a good idea to name it something more general. The next step will ask you for your contact information which includes your first name, last name, phone number, and country. Easy so far right?

Your last step in signing up will ask you to accept the user agreement terms and conditions which you should read (just kidding…who actually ever reads these entire legal terms anyhow?).

Now this next screen is very important. This is the code you will need to copy and paste into your blogger template. Go ahead and click into the box and it will automatically highlight the entire block of code for you. Now you need to copy that code and paste it into notepad or into a MS Word document. Save it as you’ll need to use it later.

After you click on the “continue >>” button you will be taken to your brand new Google Analytics dashboard! You will see your blogger blog listed but with no analytical data….yet.

Ok, now you are done with setting up your Google Analytics account. The next step is placing the tracking code into your Blogger template so it can report back to Google Analytics and provide you with some cool data points.

Step #2 - Adding GA Tracking Code to Your Blogger Template

This is not a very difficult step even if you are afraid to touch your template code. Login to your Blogger account and then click on the “Layout” => “Edit HTML” tabs. This will bring you to the template code. Before you make any changes, I advice you to back up your template just in case there are any problems. After you’ve done so, continue reading.

Now in the edit template html code window, scroll all the way to the bottom of your template code and look for the tag. There should only be one of these closing tags in your template. If you can’t find it then your template wasn’t properly created and you should add one right above the tag.The tag should always be your last line of code in your template. It signifies the end of your template.

Ok, now go back to the code you saved before in a Word Doc from Google Analytics. You are going to copy it and paste it right above the tag as illustrated in the image below. The yellow highlighted code is the new GA code I just pasted into my template.

Save your template and you shouldn’t get any error messages. If you do, it’s most likely not related to this GA code and something else with your template itself. Assuming you’ve been successful with your save, you are all done embedding the GA code in your template!

Step #3 - Confirm Google Analytics is Tracking

Go back into your Google Analytics account and look at your dashboard. Most likely you will see a little yellow exclamation mark under the “status” column that looks like this: . This means everything isn’t working properly yet which is fine because we are about to tell GA we just added the code. From your dashboard, click on the “edit” link which is located to the far right.

After you click on that link, you’ll see another screen like below. It will say “Tracking Not Installed” followed by a link “Check Status”. You’ll want to go ahead and click on that link which will tell GA to visit your site and look for the new code you just pasted in your template.

Assuming you pasted the code in there as instructed above, GA will find the new code and begin tracking everything on your blog. If you are still having problems, it’s most likely something to do with GA and you should read their help guide to troubleshoot your problem.

The message seen here, “Waiting for Data” means you have correctly setup GA and data is being gathered! Click on the top left Google Analytics logo and it will take you back to your dashboard. From there click on the “View report” link and that’s where all your very important Blogger visitor data will start appearing!

Now it usually takes an hour or so before you will see any data (maybe longer if you don’t get much traffic to your blog) so please be patient. Trust me, you’ll be logging in at least once a day just to see how much traffic your blog is getting. It’s very addicting and powerful information to learn from. You’ll be surprised which posts are your most popular and what countries people are coming from to read your blog.

Google Analytics is very powerful and we have just learned how to install it into your Blogger template. We haven’t even scratched the surface on the features and reporting it can do. For most Bloggers, this will be enough. Data will be collected and you will just review it. Others with more in-depth goals (like selling products or services, creating a sales funnel, etc) will want to spend more time learning GA. 1. Make Money Blogging by Selling Advertising Space

Before the advent of Blogs, we have e-zines and selling advertising space on ezines was a popular way to earn extra money. If you run your own Blog, you can let others advertise in your Blogs with banner ads, solo ads, sponsor ads, classifieds and so on.

Now that we have Blogs, you can repeat the same business model that e-zine publishers do, that of selling advertising space.

Joint Venture marketing is a powerful marketing strategy employed by many top online marketers.

Basically how joint venture works is this: You promote person B's products to your subscriber and customer list, and you get a cut from whatever sale that follows from this promotion.

You can apply the principle of joint venture marketing to Blogs as well. How to Use Tracking to Improve Your AdSense™ Results

Do you know which two actions are fundamental for the activity of AdSense publishers? Probably you do: testing and tracking. Is it necessary to talk about the chief importance of tracking your AdSense activity? Guess not, for it would be as if trying to prove that the quality of life is better if you see than if you can't see!

We've talked about using google channel to track your performance. Checking the reports in your AdSense account is the easiest way to track your Google AdSense stats. Thus you have data on: impressions, number of clicks, CTR, eCPM and earnings. Data is available in the aggregate or per channel -- channels can be set on a whole site, on one or more pages, on one ad unit or on a certain type of ad units (criteria varying from position to all types of formats). Now, these are basic data that will help you make steps to improve your CTR, your content based on the performance registered for certain parts of and will allow you test various formats, styles and colors for your ads in order to find out which perform better.

Yet, many AdSense users feel the need for more information than they can get through the AdSense portal. Using supplementary tracking tools can help you complete the image of your AdSense ads performance. What do these trackers offer you that Google's channels don't?

Allow you to manage the sources of traffic -- tracking where visitors come from (referrer domain) and comparing performance for various traffic sources. Thus you can make improvements to increase traffic from the effective sources. These AdSense trackers are Javascript and PHP scripts that track the events on iFrames and store them into MySQL database.
The functioning principle goes like this: the script adds an onfocus handler to all iFrames containing the AdSense ads on a page, tracking events of any iFrame, such as clicks on ads. Then it registers the events.
Unfortunately, they also record as clicks other actions that aren't clicks -- such as right-clicking or dragging without releasing the mouse button. You'll get an inaccurate, greater number of clicks.
These trackers cannot run with Mozilla/Netscape, because of the fact that these browsers have onfocus on the iFrame but it won't be triggered by any movement inside the iFrame, but only by clicks on the outer edge of the frame.

asRep by Mehmet Oner:

asRep is based on a script using Javascript code inserted at the bottom of your page.
The functioning principle differs from the one of the AdSense Trackers: it is based on a heuristic algorithm that monitors and analyzes a series of events (such as mouse positioning over an iFrame followed shortly by browser's loading of a new page) to come indirectly to the conclusion that a click was performed.
Unfortunately, it cannot track performance at individual ad level. It goes to the level of ad units.
It detects whether an ad unit displays an AdSense ad or an alternate ad.

It has dedicated click tracking algorithms for Mozilla&Firefox and IE, and a generic algorithm for other browsers.

Trackers offer also the information you get from Google channels, but you'll still need Google's stats, as they are the only source of financial information on your account.

How to Improve Content to Attract Targeted Ads

Now, you know how AdSense™ does the targeting: Google MediaPartners bot “interprets” the content of your page and establishes the theme. Based on this will appear the ads on your pages.

Many of us have experienced at least once the appearance of ads that have feeble relevance or no relevance at all for the content of the page, or the appearance of PSA (which is worse for the AdSense™ publisher, as these do not generate any revenue).

This might occur when the theme of your page is not very clearly outlined or when there is not enough text content and the resulting ads represent what Google AdSense robot interpreted as the main theme of your page.

Other Cases when PSAs Are Displayed

Technical problems: Login required, as specified in Google™'s AdSense support section — cases when MediaPartners bot is prevented from reading or interpreting correctly your page.
“stop words”: Words interpreted as offensive, usually belonging to one of the categories specified in Adsense™'s Program Policies (as a precaution, we will not exemplify here, in text. We have an image containing a quite comprehensive list.)
Yet, it seems that AdSense™ does analyze also the context in which these words appear, so you shouldn't fret about using occasionally “stop” words.

If none of these is the case of your page and you still get ads that seem irrelevant to you, then maybe the type of your site (or the page topic) might not work that well with AdSense. Practice shows that not all topics represent a good medium for AdSense. Sites that have non-commercial content or themes are more likely to be served irrelevant ads.

How to Increase Content Relevancy

Where to start?

The aim is to make your pages content-relevant for Google bot. So, first thing's first: you have to check on your pages' content relevancy.
You can do that by using the Preview Tool. Thus you can correct the display of ads by customizing your page content or by filtering unwanted ads.

A “hot tip” you can use to test site relevancy and see how theme-interpreting works: Google's Site-Flavored Search (now in beta version) — you enter your site's URL on the profile page and Google “reads” it and shows in the box on the right the results of its interpretation, what the bot “thinks” your site is about.
“Secrets” to help improve targeting (well, between us, they are not at all secrets, but for the sake of suspense...):
Optimize Your Keyword Content

The number of occurrences of keywords in the content should be enough to make the content theme-relevant. But keep them coming naturally in the content, do not overdo it.
- The key-positions should be: title, description tag, headings, URL, a top-page position. Proximity to the AdSense™ code seems to get weighted more heavily.
- Also keywords should appear bolded and in italics.
- Increase the number of keywords in the plural. Google ranks plurals separately.
- Ensure a keyword density between 5 and 20%. You can check this with the help of a keyword tracker.
- Anchor texts should include keywords.
- Stick to one main theme per page. Better more pages with just one or two related keywords per page than one long page.
HIGHLY DESCRIPTIVE FILE NAMES can be very effective (this is applicable to new pages that are not yet in the search engines, for changing the name of an older one may result in losing traffic).

Sometimes, the THEME OF THE EXTERNAL SITES you link to MATTERS for the relevance of your own ads. You may try to place relevant links near your ads.

RELEVANT DOMAIN NAMES have an influence on Google's choice of ads.
The style of your writing is not the last as importance.
- As we've seen in the end of the previous section, some topics are better than others for AdSense. However, through the way you write, you can turn a content-based, non-commercial site into a money-maker. How? By manipulating your content a little. It's necessary to have at least some pages with practical information or recommendations (products/books) on your topic, or, better, to blend this type of info in as many pages as possible.
- Getting feedback from your visitors is valuable: find out what they want and what they are looking for. Thus you can target your content accordingly.

Although not widely popularized, there is an additional facility that Google offers some publishers: the largely discussed Google hints -- the publisher is allowed to specify the exact keywords (at his choice) for his ads targeting, adding a supplementary line to the javascript. Obviously, the matter is selectively allowed by Google.

If you've tried it all and you're still unhappy with the results, AdSense permits the choice of an alternate ad -- an ad you choose yourself, not related in any way with Google's system.

Remember!

Above all, make sure you check the ads Google serves your pages for not only may they be irrelevant and little producing but they might damage your image; many visitors think that you've chosen those ads to represent your page.

Cases are when really funny ads are shown; for example, on a page on Indian archaeology, a dating ad about meeting hot Indian women.

However, don't loose from sight another aspect of the content work: try not to use it by all means with the primary aim of gaining money. You'll be surprised maybe to learn that your earnings will improve if you just go on with your work/content building out of real preoccupation and enthusiasm (is it too much :)?). It might sound like bare theory, but if you work conscientiously on something you love to do, your income will improve in a natural (and sounder) manner.

Odd manner of content "improvement" for AdSense

There is the theory (very annoying, in fact, for a writer:)) according to which if you have an uninteresting, dissatisfactory content/page, visitors will look for a way out by clicking on an ad! (twice annoying, as it seems to work!) Well, at least some things are sure: your site will not get any browsing through and you won't have probably any return visitors if you do this! Plus the surfers arriving on your page might be so annoyed that they might choose leaving your page by just closing the browser (with no clicks)!

How To Increase Traffic to Your Blog

One important topic for blog owners is how to increase traffic, which is easier than it seems, once you know how. In this article, we cover 7 specific methods of increasing traffic to your blog.

Tip #1: Sign up for pinging services
It seems pretty obvious, but many bloggers, even those who are more experienced, don’t sign up for pinging services. If you’re new to blogging, pinging means that when your blog is updated, a “ping” is sent out by the service to let pinging sites know that your blog has been updated. People who are visiting sites with pinging services will then see your blog flash across the side of the screen as “newly updated.” Pinging services include Yahoo’s blogs, weblogs.com, Google Blog search and ZingFast.

Tip #2: Sign up for Technorati
If you go to technorati.com, you’ll see an option on the left side of the screen to “Claim Your Blog.” Doing so allows you to get updated link counts, add your photo or branding to Technorati and see your Technorati link. Having your blog claimed on Technorati helps to increase traffic because the millions of people who go to that site will have a chance to see your blog listed there.

Tip #3: Sign up for FeedBurner, an RSS service
FeedBurner basically helps you to promote your blog’s content, and to build and measure your audience.

Tip #4: Bookmark your blogs at places like del.icio.us
You can set up an account and profile at del.icio.us. From there, you can add links to your blog, as well as excerpts. When a user visits your profile on del.icio.us, they will see a link to your blog and excerpts. There are other social bookmarking sites that you can use in much the same way. All of these social bookmarking sites can help you increase traffic.

Tip #5: Post comments at other blogs
Here, you should visit similar blogs to your own, post legitimate comments and then sign your name(along with a link to your blog). This way, people know you aren’t there just to promote your site—you’re there to post a good piece of feedback and also say where you’re from.

Tip #6: Ask owners of other blogs to post a link to yours
Find other blogs that are similar to yours. If they seem to be decently popular (if they have a good amount of comments for each post), contact the owner of the blog and ask if they will add a link to your blog. Offering to link back to their blog is a way to sweeten the offer. Reciprocal linking helps to increase traffic.

Tip #7: Use keywords in your blog
Like regular Web pages, having a good keyword density on a blog is a terrific way of getting search engine spiders to notice your page. (FYI: Search engine spiders are programs from search engines that browse sites and report back their findings to the search engine database, which then lists that site. The more keywords on your site, the more likely it is for a search engine spider to pay a visit)

If your average blog posting is around 200 words, use 2-6 keywords per blog post. This creates a keyword density of between 1 and 3 percent, a respectable number. Remember that you don’t want to use too many keywords, as that will make your blog look bad. Also be sure that the keywords used are relevant to your blog. Before even making a blog posting, decide what the post will be about and then select a keyword or two to use in your post. This will help to increase your traffic.

Avoid Unethical Practices in SEO

Being advertised on a search engine is one of the most basic ways of inviting visitors into your site. But advertising yourself is not enough you also have to ensure that you have the right amount of visibility which will get you noticed; a high ranking therefore is an absolute must. Search engine optimization is that missing link between a good and a great business, it earns you customers, keeps your website well visited and makes your investment on the site a success.

While nobody dare deny the kind of benefits you are likely to reap from being ranked high on a search engine, a certain amount of decorum needs to be maintained even here. A number of unethical practices have recently become prevalent amongst those desperate to boost their rankings. While on first glance these might seem completely harmless to you it is important that you recognize them for what they really are. The first step towards doing that is spotting what YOU might be doing wrong. Following is a list to help you through your discovery:

Inappropriate use of keywords

Sooner or later you are bound to find out that between you and the search engine, you are the one with the brain cells. But dont go overboard with your discovery. Yes, you can fool the search engine with long strings of text into which you discreetly bury a gallon of keywords which have no relevance whatsoever with your site, but in the end you wont be fooling the customers who will be finally using the links. Lets face it, if the user is searching for fish or fishing he/she is most likely to not click on a site with a text like boating fishing exotic animals site seeing great locations cruising Kuala Lumpur. The irony is that if someone is really searching for a subject related to your sites material even then he/she is probably going to skip clicking on your link because the description betrays no clue as to what really the site is about.

Inappropriate use of Meta tags

First things first, if you are wondering what META tags are then they are the html code that your website designer has used to create your webpage. They are also used to inform search engines as to what the keywords on the site are. So as is obvious by now certain ways of tampering with your META tags, certain tricks, lets call them, might help you fool the search engine in ways very similar to that described above. However, your brainwave wont get you too far unfortunately because stupid though it is, even a search engine knows not to go by appearance alone when it comes to websites, so instead of depending on the META tags alone it usually also checks up the content!

False content

As a user you have probably come across a dozen sites which seem to have long strings of text which have nothing to do with the site as a whole and probably make no sense individually either. These are what are called False content; they are put up on a site only to use a few keywords which might get detected by a search engine. Needless to say such content is a complete obstacle in a good read and even if the overall look and feel of your site is A1 every visitor will get put off by these.

While no one is taking away the fact that a good ranking is important it is probably also of some importance to gain it the right way. And tricking the visitor or disrupting their read is certainly not the way I would call right. Stick to making your website useful and make sure it has the right kind of real content, once that is done no one will be able to stop you from getting a high ranking with the search engines.
