Choosing an affiliate program can be one of the more difficult aspects of a work from home webmaster. Although there are plenty to choose from, finding a good one can be tough.

There are many things to look for in an affiliate program. Each with varying degrees of importance for each work from home webmaster. For your home based business, you'll need to find an affiliate program that pays good, customer support is always an important factor in any home based business. And something that your visitors will be interested in while not sending away a potential customer.

What are Affiliate programs?

Affiliate programs are a way for webmasters and home based business owners to make additional revenue from their website. Affiliate programs often pay a percentage of the sales revenue generated by the affiliate. So if you were an affiliate for XYZ company and you refer a person to their website from your website, and they make a $100 sale. If your commission rate was 10%, you would make $10 just by referring people to their website. You can see how this can generate money from just having a website.

Affiliate Programs Information

Each affiliate program is different. Take a good look at their terms of service and other affiliate information. Some things to look for in their package:

  • Minimum Payout from affiliate programs
  • This is usually around $50-$100 depending on the site. If its much higher, you may get discouraged before you get your first paycheck
  • Currency Paid by affiliate programs
  • This applies to affiliates that live outside the home country of the affiliate program. Take into account the cost of converting their currency to yours. Also they may not allow affiliates from different countries.
  • Type of Payment from affiliate programs
  • More and more affiliate programs are moving to payments via paypal, which is great, because it's instant, not like paper checks that can get lost in the mail.
  • Members of the affiliate program
  • How many members do they have? A large website can have thousands; you'll need to find a unique niche that will generate revenue from your website.
  • Targeting for your website
  • Find an affiliate program that is closely related to your website's theme. For instance, a website about digital camera reviews would have a digital camera store affiliate banner or text link.

Finding that affiliate program that generates the revenue you think you deserve from your home-based website can be a difficult task. You can be sure you will find a few that isn't all they add up to. Although on the other hand, some affiliate programs are rock solid with plenty of potential. I can't stress enough how much customer service means in an affiliate program. Remember they are making money as well as you, so whatever they can do to help you, will ultimately help them. If you have questions, email them and ask them, if it takes more than a week to get an answer out of them. Think of how it will be when you're an affiliate with a real problem. So be careful and research each affiliate program.
